Free the Girls

Have Faith and Free the Girls

An Outreach to help victims of Human Trafficking

bra 1   In January Ginny Slichter asked me if the Daughters of the King could help support a project she learned about from a friend in another church – collecting bras to send to Free the Girls. The project sounded interesting and when I read about Free the Girls I thought their mission was definitely worthwhile. Free The Girls is an international non-profit organization devoted to coming alongside sex trafficking survivors with a path to true freedom. They currently work in three countries: El Salvador, Mozambique, and Costa Rica. They collaborate with partners on the ground in those countries to encourage, equip, and empower girls and women to earn a safe income selling bras in the second-hand market. Their partners work closely to provide programming for holistic reintegration.bra 3

What was concerning to me was Ginny’s thought that we could get 300 bras. I thought, “300 is a lot of bras, even if we ask everyone and they ask everyone.” What I didn’t foresee was everyone’s generosity. I forgot there are some wonderful businesses with great people who always rise to the challenge. Donna Yanalavage is employed at VF Outlet in West Reading. VF Outlet is a company of people who rise to the challenge! They donated over 400 bras –  some gently used and lots of brand-new bras!!

On March 2nd Ginny, Charlie, and I loaded up 700 bras to take to her friend Earlene from Trinity Solebury. On April 1st our bras were packed up with other bras and 1718 bras were sent on their way to Free the Girls!

bra 9 I don’t think I’ll ever get to go to El Salvador, Mozambique, or Costa Rica, but it’s exciting to think my bras will. I will be here, but my faith in people caring for people got a huge boost. Thanks Christ Church ladies and thanks VF Outlet!
